the problem
You’ve probably got a mess of cables.

the solution
Hair ties with balls. Get them at any big box store.
Here’s what you do with them:
Then you do this:
I also do this:
Total cost for two packages of hair ties and one package of Ziplock bags: about $8.

I use the velcro ties. Purpose built, less bulky, and a little less gay (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

I’m afraid grey velcro ties AREN’T as good. They’re not as secure, more difficult to use, more expensive. And, since velcro is kind of stiff stuff, it’s more bulky than a hair tie. Having worked as a computer technician, I can assure you that I’ve never seen a better cable tie.

Part of the beauty of hair ties is they’re crazily inexpensive and readily available. The velcro ones give up a bit of functionality in exchange for stylishness. I sort of LIKE how unstylish the hair ties are. They’re utilitarian in a, “I’m so straight, I knit,” sort of way.

I disagree. All my velcro strips are double sided along their entire 4″ or 5″ length (1/2″ width), so you just wrap em around the cables and your done, they stick to themselves and will never stretch out. Nice, neat, tight LITTLE bundles, every time.
If you roll up a strip it’s about the same size as ONE of the TWO balls on a tie. Waaay less bulky than those plastic balls which, by design, have a tendency slip off of each other and unravel. I’ve seen it happen (velcro is less secure? are you insane? every wrap makes more velcro contact, ie: better hold).
They are ridiculously inexpensive at most any hardware or automotive stores. Just like your hair ties, they come in a variety of fashionable colors (grey?). I’ve tried the balled hair ties and as a gigging musician with tons of cables “I can assure you” that velcro ties are not only the tie-of-choice among my associates, they are far superior.

See, I’ve only found ‘em at Staples, and for FAR too much money. Automotive shops, you say? I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled.

I, of course, can only speak to my experience, my man. Whatever works best for you. But that’s my opinion and I wanted to share it, in case it could help.

I now use velcro. I will get some of these to try. Nice colors, nice idea, velcro is so ugly. How is velcro related to sexual preference or hair ties. I can use them for cords and for my hair.
Thanks
